Using Stories to Heal (and Turning 50)

In times gone by, wisdom was often passed down from elders to younger community members through storytelling, when tribes would commune around the campfire, the wise folk regaling those less worldly with their anecdotes and tales.

In our modern world, the campfires have gone but the power to heal through stories is as relevant as ever. When we experience significant challenges in our lives which propel us on our learning and healing journeys and we return having gained our wisdom, we can share this with others; to uplift those going through similar experiences and act as way-showers to illuminate the path back to the light, or simply to inspire others to share their own stories and to find their own voice.

As they say, we live our lives forward but understand them backwards. The more we live, the more we get to explore life and love, and the more we understand. And when we take time to reflect, contemplate and integrate, the more wisdom we subsequently gain.

Many in the modern world are apprehensive about reaching major age milestones, yet as I turned 50 last week, I invite anyone uneasy about age to not see it as something to be feared but as an aspect of life to be embraced; for becoming older bequeaths us with invaluable life experience and self-knowledge, and along with this the accompanying gift of wisdom. We get to become the elders. We get to use our words and our stories to nurture and nourish ourselves and others, to provide solace in the hearts where it is needed.

Each day is a new dawn to celebrate life, to live from the heart and to share love. So let us welcome our coming years with open hearts and optimism, that we may become equipped with stories that have the power to heal, uplift and inspire, which we can then share around our modern campfires of social media and other channels.

Sending you blessings through your years.
